Beneath the North York Moors National Park and reaching out into the North Sea is the highest grade source of polyhalite to be found anywhere in the world. But extracting this natural fertiliser poses challenges in engineering and environment terms, and requires the trust and commitment of the local community. Luminous were asked to help bring this unique sustainability story to the surface.

Sirius Minerals is the UK-based company focused on the development and operation of a new polyhalite project in North Yorkshire. In due course, the project will make a significant and sustainable contribution to global food security, and in doing so, deliver significant economic benefits to the local regional and national economy. Poly4, the trademarked product form of the polyhalite mineral, naturally contains four (potassium, sulphur, magnesium and calcium) of the six minerals that plants need for growth. It will make a significant contribution to helping boost global food production, without adversely affecting the local environments in which it is used.

While being aware of its beneficial impact on the global environment, Sirius acknowledges its responsibilities to the National Park, too. Its site is landscaped to screen it from view and, to minimise vehicle movements through the area, raw materials will be transported underground via a high-capacity mineral transport system to the north-east coast where they will be processed into Poly4 ready for distribution by sea.

How Luminous worked with Sirius

Sirius produced its first CSR report in 2016, but wanted to expand the strategic content, design and company narrative for 2018.

Our strategic team began by working with Sirius to elicit the company’s responsible business stories, successes and data for the reporting period. Luminous then advised on key reporting, governance and non-financial reporting requirements.

Luminous also advised on content, layout and structure to help Sirius maximise the impact and engagement of its work to date, while also ensuring it was compliant with the latest legislative requirements and conforming to best practice throughout the process.

The result is a visually striking report worthy of an aspiring world-class fertiliser business and the commitment it has made to a more sustainable world.
